What is Shade Covering?

Shade Covering is known by many names such as shade cloth, greenhouse covering, tarp, privacy cloth, privacy screen, shade netting, sun screen, patio cover, pet protection, deck screen, marina cover.

If you live in a humid area, misting or fogging may not be enough to cool your greenhouse in those hot, humid summer months. When all else fails you can create your own shade by putting shade covering on your greenhouse.

Shade cloth or Shade Covering is a commercially available material for hanging over your greenhouse glazing to cool it in summer months. They are usually made of loosely woven polyester or even aluminum and can be found in varying densities or degrees of shade from appx. 5% to 95%. Remember that shading will affect your plant growth so chose as low a density as you can get away with. Most plants will do best with a maximum of 40% - 60% shade. When growing orchids, 75% or higher maybe needed to get correct light levels.

Choosing a shade cloth with grommets will make it much easier to install. Use nylon cord or rope to secure the shade cloth to your greenhouse frame. If your greenhouse has roof vents that open you may have to install your shade cloth in sections to accommodate this. Shade cloth is open weave fabric so it can go directly over windows. It's best to attach the shade cloth so it can be rolled up or retracted as needed.

Hinged Grommet Fasteners

Plastic Nylon Hinged Grommet Fasteners cover a larger surface area on the fabric for strength and stability. These do-it-yourself on-site fasteners are less expensive than conventional grommets and are easier to use.

Brass Grommet Fasteners

Brass Grommets go on the edges of the material, you will need taping as well. Brass grommets are size #2 grommet with 5/16" hole.

Shade Cloth is extremely durable, accurately constructed, and available in multiple densities from 22% to 90%.

The following knit density (shade factor) sun block percentages are commonly used:

* Pergola and patio covers: normally +/- 80% depending upon level of heat reduction desired

* Swimming pool leaf covers: 30 percent will keep leaves out and 40% or 50% for needles

* Wind screen panels: 65% up to 90% depending on need for privacy and wind blockage

* Water treatment plants: algae control and chlorine contact channels typically use 90%

* Spider diaper curtains: 80% or 90% under dock roof keeps spider poo off your boat

* Koi pond leaf netting: +/- 40% unless you also wish to lower water temperature a bit

* Greenhouse cover: 30 up to 60 percent shade factor based on plant lighting needs

* Bug netting curtain: 65% is dense enough for larger insects and 80%+ for smaller

* Privacy fence: a single layer of 87% provides privacy from a distance and at an angle

* Paintball netting: 50 percent and above will stop paintballs from passing through

The material is lightweight, being 20-25% lighter than other woven materials and dramatically more strength. It is easy to install and can be cut on site and will not unravel.

This material will reduce soil loss by helping lessen evaporation. The tough lockstitch knitted construction resists rips, tears and fraying. Applied levels remain constant during product life. All standard widths can be seamed together for even wider dimensions than standard widths. A variety of percentage shades are available.
